Student entrepreneurship is on the rise around campuses all over the country.

Young founders who want to start companies while still in school or soon after graduating have an increasing number of resources to tap into that exist just for them. Universities and other organisations offer opportunities for students to find a community, along with a host of programs, collaborative spaces, and mentors to inspire and support them as they go about solving a problem or developing a great business idea.

If you’re a student or alumnus and thinking about launching a startup then you’re in luck because we’ve gathered student-friendly accelerators around Sydney.

With two free distinct program streams, the FFWD hub is an initiative to support international students and alumni to build their startups in Australia.

FFWD: Your Idea aids in launching your business from concept to product through online courses that you can work on at your own pace along with a series of weekly workshops. This program is a great way to grow your network and learn more about the Australian business landscape.

FFWD: Your Startup provides access to 3-6 months of free coworking space and mentors to help develop budding startups. FFWD: Your Startup is available to students and alumni that already have an MVP or have graduated from an accelerator program.

Deadline for applications: January, 2020

Catalysr is an award-winning pre-accelerator for early-stage startups. They run an intensive entrepreneurship program for Migrapreneurs or migrant and refugee entrepreneurs, who want to make it big in Australia.

Since 2016, they have worked with over 270 migrapreneurs which have grown into 40 businesses and counting. The Catalysr community includes 500+ professionals, advisors and investors.

As a student-focused community, Textbook Ventures helps students excel in their entrepreneurial undertakings to become catalysts of change. They offer support to student founders through mentorship programs, events, workshops, and access to funding networks.

Operating on a belief that entrepreneurship starts early, Textbook Ventures wants to empower student associates with the ability to invest in student-run companies.

Length: 10 weeks
Investment: $20,000
Deadline for applications: May 2020

UNSW’s flagship accelerator is tailored for students, staff, and alumni with high-potential startups that want to make it big.

Accepted companies will not only receive $20,000 in funding but undergo 10 weeks of accelerated learning and receive access to co-working space and amenities courtesy of the university.

The course wraps up with a trip to Silicon Valley where startups will be able to connect with seasoned entrepreneurs and participate in intensive workshops.

Investment: $5,000 seed funding

Incubate is USYD’s flagship business accelerator program that offers startups, run by student entrepreneurs, the opportunity to grow on a university campus. Since 2012 they’ve fostered over 115 Startups, across 14 classes that are now worth over $67m.

The program takes early-stage startups and provides founders with support, mentorship, office space, and seed funding to help them build their product or service.

Investment: Potential $50,000 seed funding

UTS Startups was established with the aim to become the leading Australian university in the creation of startups and for supporting student entrepreneurship.

UTS Startups members are provided access to a range of resources, industry connections, mentors, inspirational events, and masterclasses. The program focusses on the diversity of student needs and motivations to meaningfully scale startup support.

Length: 12 months
Investment: Potential $50,000 seed funding

The Launch Pad is a Technology Business Incubator that provides a supportive eco-system for early-stage businesses in the Western Sydney region working in high-growth industry sectors or using technologies where there is potential to drive international market opportunities, particularly within the Asia Pacific region.

Immersed in a 12 month program compared to the normal 3 or 6 month programs, advanced technology startups are able to gain a deeper experience and have sufficient time for technical development and international market connectivity.

These programs are in place to connect students with pertinent industry partners and equip them with skills in critical thinking in starting their own business ventures. With the help of these various programs, anyone can learn and apply entrepreneurial skills, future-proof their careers and launch their own startups!
